How do you pull Organic YouTube impressions vs Paid YouTube impressions at the individual video level? I’m looking to use Supermetrics to accomplish this in Looker
Hi
First and foremost, please accept our sincere apologies for the significant delay in responding to your question here. We're really sorry for keeping you waiting, and we truly appreciate your patience 😇
We hope you've already found a solution, but just in case you're still working on this, or for anyone else in the community searching for this answer, here is a clear guide on how to combine YouTube organic and paid data in Looker Studio.
The Goal: see Paid vs. Organic impressions for each video
The key is that YouTube data lives in two places: organic performance in YouTube Analytics and paid performance in Google Ads. To see them together, you'll bring both into Looker Studio and blend them.
Here’s how to do it, step-by-step:
Step 1: Bring in Your Organic YouTube Data
-
Use the Supermetrics for YouTube Analytics connector.
-
In the connector, set it up like this:
-
Metrics: Select
Impressions(these are your organic views). -
Dimensions: Select
Video titleandVideo ID. The Video ID is especially important for the next step!
-
Step 2: Bring in Your Paid YouTube Ad Data
-
Use the Supermetrics for Google Ads connector.
-
In the connector, set it up like this:
-
Metrics: Select
Impressions(these are the impressions from your video ads). -
Dimensions: Select
Video titleandVideo ID. -
Important: Make sure your Google Ads campaigns are set up to report on the Video ID dimension so the data can be linked correctly.
-
Step 3: Blend the Two Data Sources Together
This is where the magic happens!
-
In your Looker Studio report, create a new chart (like a table).
-
Instead of choosing a single data source, click on Blend Data.
-
Add your YouTube Analytics data source and your Google Ads data source.
-
For both data sources, add the
Video IDas a dimension (this is your "join key"). -
Now, in the metrics section, you can select:
-
Impressionsfrom the YouTube Analytics source (renaming it to "Organic Impressions" is helpful). -
Impressionsfrom the Google Ads source (renaming it to "Paid Impressions").
-
And that's it! You'll now have a single table showing each of your videos side-by-side with their organic and paid impression counts.
We hope this clears things up. If you (or anyone else) have any follow-up questions, please don't hesitate to ask. We'll be keeping a much closer eye on this thread 💜
